Wellness

Hello people!
This page is going to be dedicated to trying to get people to pay a little more attention to themselves in a lot of different ways.  The more I learn on the topics of mental, physical and spiritual health, the more I seem to notice people neglecting these issues.  In a certain light its understandable; we are living in a very busy world, and with so many deadlines and not enough hours in the day, we do what we naturally have to: we prioritize.  We focus on our life missions in the order of what most desperately need to be done or what looms closest to us--a logical way of taking care of business.

The only flaw in this system is that it often runs under the assumption that the engine (that would be you) will  be running.  Whether the engine is or is not running isn’t the issue;  the issue is that in already accounting for your mental and physical energy to carry out your tasks, you have most probably neglected to check the oil!

Why is it that while we are so busy prioritizing, the tasks of looking after our health and well being are often not even on the list?

I feel that we were raised this way, particularly in the West.  When I was in China I was amazed to see just how many people young and old had knowledge of Tai Chi and Kung Fu.  Almost everyone I spoke with at some point in their lives had become acquainted with the exercise of martial arts, either through their parents, friends, or academically.

I’m not even necessarily speaking about martial arts, rather about health.  Why is it that despite the fact that without our health everything else comes to a grinding halt, our school systems are not giving this subject the attention it deserves?

Gym class, or Physical Education class, are not health.  They are functions of health.  We need to be educated on looking after ourselves, the true definition of self defense.  There should be classes in school on rest, anger and stress management, nutrition and exercise.  They should be given from elementary school on up, and classes like this should have as much emphasis on them as sciences and languages (if not more).

We have to condition ourselves to respect our engines. We have to learn to do this, and teach others to do it as well. How does yours sound?  Are you listening??

Its very true that school, jobs, families and random life trials and tribulations leave few with time for personal upkeep to spend on themselves; but just think about how important this upkeep is.  Most of the time whether you know it or not, other people are depending on you.  Are you sure you can’t spare a little more time making sure you are okay?

After all to “you”, you are all you have got!

And on that note I wish you all happy listening.  May wellness be with us all!
